Midicronica Interview

Midicronica - art by steroid - click for full size

Once upon a time in the fabled Steroid LostNumbers Laboratory a group of robotic rap artists were created. With numbers for names and a lingering fear of being scrapped floating in their minds these anime inspired characters are the front for a talented group of Japanese DJs and musicians called Midicronica. Their song San Francisco was used as an ending theme for the popular anime series "Samurai Champloo".

So come learn the story of the rap artists known affectionately as #894, #181, #716 and #563 and discover the answer to the riddle: What does Shanghai, Swine flu and Midicronica have in common?

On July 8, 2009 the members of Midicronica were kind enough to give an interview to Andrew from J-Pop World. All photos courtesy of Midicronica with credits to steroid.

First let's cover the lore of Midicronica in our ten-question Midicronica Quiz:

1) Once upon a time there was a place called the Steroid LostNumbers Laboratory. What was that place like?

It's just a laboratory.

2) Is that where you were all created?

Yeah, but we are defective products.

3) How did you get your numbers?

The numbers were given to us before we were aware.

4) You were sent from the Steroid LostNumbers Laboratory to do what exactly?

To tell the truth, they planned to scrap us because we are defective products. But we escaped from there to this world. At the beginning the laboratory didn't intend to send us to this world. We just escaped from there. lol

5) How did you come to reside in the Freak's Mansion?

We have settled there because the mansion was ruined.

6) How do you communicate with humans?

We chose rap music to communicate with humans because the Japanese language is similar to our (LostNumbers) language. Its especially suited to Japanese rap.

7) How are you different from the other inhabitants of planet Earth?

Our figure is the only difference. We are negligently the same as the Japanese prime minister. lol

8) Do you ever get back to the Steroid LostNumbers Laboratory?

No.106 was deported once, but he came back to this world recently. So, perhaps we can do something together again. I have not returned to the laboratory.

9) How long will your mission last?

It continues until we get bored. If we complete the mission, they'll scrap us. So, perhaps we'll keep creating music forever, because we don't want to be scraped.

10) What do you want everyone to know most about the members of Midicronica?

I want to know what everyone wants to know about us. Let me know!

Let's take a dimensional shift and get to know the members of Midicronica better. First off, who came up with the idea for the group?

I forget. lol But it started like an amusement rather than a mission. It is still our pleasure.

Who came up with the name and what does it mean?

894 named it. Midicronica is a coined word. I think it sounds nice and that is the only reason. It has no meaning. lol

In 2005 you came out with your first album, #501. How long had you been working on the music?

Since we were born.

The album includes the song San Francisco, which was used as an ending theme for the anime series "Samurai Champloo". How did you hook up with them?

Our member DJ563 has a connection to Nujabes and gave him our demo. The offer developed so quickly and it was decided before we knew it. It was sooooooo lucky.

Who writes the music and lyrics to most of your songs?

We write our lyrics for ourselves and every member can create beats. No rapper raps other person's lyrics! There is no ghostwriter in our team.

Can you describe what your writing and recording process is like?

In most cases we decide on a topic and title of the piece first. The lyrics are basically written at that time. Anyway, our recording is always fun.

Have you done music for any other anime show?

No, but we want to make another song for anime. Do you know someone who creates anime? Please introduce us!!

Since #501 you've released one or two albums every year. How do you feel your music has changed over time?

Including the environment around us? Mmm... none. But the Japanese musical scene always keeps changing. But we want to do what we want to do rather than belong to the worthless Japanese musical scene. We brush up our sneakers and skills every day!!

Do you do live performances?

Of course.

What are some of your favorite places to play?

Beach live @ Niijima Japan!!

Any thoughts on performing outside of Japan one day?

To tell the truth, we had a plan to go to Shanghai, but the show was canceled because of Swine flu. So, please anyone invite us to go abroad!!!

Can you tell us about some of the other musicians you've worked with?

Jacky Otaka (Super Stupid), SONOMI, ALPHA, TAKATSUKI, Smooth Current, shin-ski, asayake production, Delmonte, Masaru Iwabuchi, lamelomania, Goro Kumai, GUMUNA... etc.

How many current members of Midicronica are there?

Midicronica consists of four members (716, 894, 181, 563) mainly. We also have tons of support members.

How did each of you pick the musical instrument you play?

I always choose the one which has good touching feelings. lol

What first got you into rap music?

I was a skateboarder. One day one of my skater friends told me: "Hey! You are a rapper from now on!!" And he gave me a microphone. This was the beginning. lol

Can you tell us about the artist who does your drawings?

The artist duo called steroid does all our artwork. 716 found them on the internet and got conected with them.

Aside from being in Midicronica what other activities do you all do?

716: The rap unit ASTRO.

894: ASTRO, Jugem a.k.a JUG (another rap unit), Ocha production (sound production team), Unagi works (graphic design team)... etc. I got hundreds of other activities.

181: Ngoma (Dub-Breakbeat band including Japanese drums), Padtricks (sound production project).

563: Ngoma , foundfootage (sound production project).

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

We just finished the release party. Now, we are in the midst of production for the next album with Shin-Ski of Martiangang.

Do you have anything else you want to bring up or comment on?

You can download our music from iTunes all over the world!! Please make us happy...

Do you have a final message to all your fans?
