Yui Makino Interview

Yui Makino - click for full size

"This song is about girls falling in love. This is a wholly new song for me in a sense that the sound approach is different from songs I've performed before." - Yui Makino

That song would be Fuwa Fuwa♪ from Yui Makino's first single release on March 3, 2010. Fans of anime might best know Yui Makino for her voice acting on shows such as the "Tsubasa Chronicle" series and her singing theme songs for shows like "Soseino Aquarion". Gifted with a charming voice for both genres of entertainment, we think Yui Makino is a talent to keep an eye on as she more fully explores the solo musical side of her career.

In June she'll be returning to Paris to perform at the Japan Expo with additional shows being scheduled for Japan.

On May 21, 2010 Yui Makino was kind enough to give an interview to Andrew from J-Pop World. All photos courtesy of Sony Music.

In June you'll be traveling to Paris to participate in "Music Day." Can you tell us more the event and why you chose to attend?

I had a chance to join Japan Expo last year. I was moved to know that there are so many people who support me in France, and feel like coming back to Paris. I'll perform with support musicians, but the set list is secret.

What are you looking forward to most?

I'll perform longer than last year. Hope I can enjoy the concert together with local audience. I'm looking forward to it.

The set list you're going to play is a secret?

I wonder which song it will be. I would like to ask them.

Who will be performing with you?

Guitarist and violinist.

After the event is over what do you hope to have accomplished?

I would like to enjoy the town watching.

As you said you attended the Expo last year in Paris. What memories still stand out for you?

I'm very happy to know that "Tsubasa Chronicle" is very famous over there and many people like Sakura.

Do you have any sightseeing planed that you missed last time?

I would like to visit churches this time.

Last September you got to be a guest of honor at New York's Anime Festival. How did you like your time there?

I was happy to know that I could do cultural exchanges with local fans through animation, and I gained power through them.

On March 3rd you released a new single through Sony Music. Can you tell us more about the music and which song is your favorite?

The title is Fuwa fuwa♪. This song is about girls falling in love. This is a wholly new song for me in a sense that the sound approach is different from songs I've performed before.

Now that's it been a few years since your debut with "OMNA MAGNI", what memories stand out about those days?

In those days, I had a couple of advices from various staff, and was looking for "correct" answers to the music. Right now, I do vocal training and preparation for performance so that I can enjoy singing and performing.

How did you first get into the voice acting part of your career?

Through the passing of "Tsubasa Chronicle" voice cast audition, I started the career.

What goes through your mind before you voice a character for a show?

Considering the hidden personality and feeling of the animation characters. I do voice casting carefully, word by word.

Who has been your greatest inspiration as a musician or actress?

My father, Shunji Iwai, the film director, piano teacher...

With such a busy schedule, what do you do for fun and relaxation?

Sleeping and self cultivation. (laughs)

Any other plans for the future you can give us a sneak peak at?

A solo concert will be held at Nihon Seinenkan, Tokyo on August 28.

Do you have a final message to all your fans?

I'm looking forward to seeing you there!!!
