Fun and free, the way rock was meant to be. That's the feeling you get from sugar'N'spice. Based out of Osaka, this four-girl band combines an upbeat vocal sound with classic guitar, bass and drum work. Their self-titled second album was released earlier this year.

So come say hello to Kyao, Tsue, Yu and Aska and hear what they had to say about their new music, latest tour and their hopes for the future.

On June 13, 2009 the members of sugar'N'spice were kind enough to give an interview to Andrew from J-Pop World. All photos courtesy of sugar'N'spice.

Let's start your latest album, "sugar'N'spice", just released this year. How would you describe the album's musical style?

It is Girls' Rock. Mostly in Japanese, but people of all ages and both sexes all over the world can enjoy it.

How long had you been working on the songs?

About a year.

What songs are you most proud of and why?

All songs! Because it was so hard to choose these six songs from the songs we have. These six songs make sugar'N'spice "sugar'N'spice"!

Do have a favorite song to play live?

Dance Tune. It is a song which makes people dance! Even we play the instruments dancing!!

Who writes the band's music and lyrics?

Kyao: Mostly I do. I've been doing this almost for ten years. There are some songs we made together and Tsue wrote too.

Can you tell us how you write music?

Kyao: I usually come up with the ideas in the classes, on the train, or when I work. So I try not to forget the melody till I get home. Then, at home, I play the guitar and complete the songs. When I forget the melody, it means that the song is not so good, deserves to be forgotten!

Can you describe how the album was recorded?

We finished recording in two days! We didn't have much time to spend on recording, so we slept over at the recording studio. It was fun! At night we had a little party and had tons of fun as usual. It was not like serious recording.

You recently did a tour of Okinawa to promote the album. How did it go?

It was great! We met so many people. They were so sweet and we received a warm welcome. We love Okinawa so much. It is a special place to us.

What is it like performing and traveling to Okinawa compared to other parts of Japan?

Playing at the places we've never been always makes us grow up. As for Okinawa, traveling there is very tough! We have to fly to Okinawa carrying huge suitcases and heavy instruments. By the time we arrive Okinawa, we get so tired.

What were some of your favorite places to play?

The gig club, "Koza 7th heaven" in Okinawa. When we had a show there, there were so many American militaries. We felt like we were playing in America! And it made us more excited!!

Let's get to know the band better. First off, can each of your describe the hometown you grew up in?

Kyao: I grew up in the countryside. I used to play outside all day long with my brothers and their friends, which I don't do these days anymore.

Tsue: I grew up in the countryside too. Many people in the town work on the land.

Yu: I was born and grew up in Osaka, one of the biggest cities in Japan. I've been enjoying this urban life.

Aska: Where I grew up, there was an American military base. A lot of American soldier lived there, so my hometown was little different from Japanese normal cities.

What kind of kids were you growing up?

Kyao: I was such a musical girl. I played the piano, the electric piano, and the violin. I belonged to a chorus group, a musical group, and did a lot of shows since I was very little.

Yu: I was a shy girl. And I still rather stay home than go out.

Tsue & Aska: We were pretty naughty kids! Staying outside all day long was our favorite thing to do in those days.

How did each of you first get into music?

sugar'N'spice live- click for full size Kyao: As I said before, since I was little, too little to be conscious of, I've been with music. Even though I hated the piano lessons so much, I owe what I am now to my parents a lot.

Yu: Me too. I've been surrounded by music whether I like it or not.

Tsue: I got into music because I liked it! It was the greatest decision that I've ever made.

Aska: You know I was born with the drum sticks. lol.

How did you all pick the instruments you play?

Kyao: After long years playing the piano, I wanted to start playing the new instrument, the guitar. I was 15 years old and didn't have enough money to buy an electric guitar, but one day, I won first prize!! Guess what I got, the electric guitar!! It is inevitable that I play the guitar.

sugar'N'spice live- click for full size Yu: There is a bass guitar player who I really respect for, so I started to play because I wanted to be like him! He is Tetsu from L'Arc~en~Ciel.

Tsue: One day Kyao asked me to play the guitar in her band! I said "yes!!!" at once even though I've never play the guitar before!! lol.

Aska: When I was in elementary school, my teacher asked me to play the drums. I thank her for having asked me.

Can you tell us the story of how the band formed?

Kyao: I had played in many bands, but in 2006, I belonged to nothing. So I wanted to start a new band, and asked my friends whether they know someone who can play the instruments. Out of expectation, they all said "I can do that!!" which turned out to be a big lie later on. lol.

Had anyone been in another group before joining the band?

Kyao: Yes I had. Like I said, I had played in many bands before I started sugar'N'spice. I'm a big fan of girls' band. It is the most fun thing in this world! I've always played in girls' band. Go girls!!!

What was the first year like together? What were the first songs you played together?

Aska joined us in 2008, so four of us have been playing just for several months. The first song we played together was almost there. When we played it for the first time, we felt that everything was so right.

Tell us about writing and recording your first album, "spangle", in 2007.

Kyao: I did everything. I used my little MTR which has only 4 tracks (!!) and the music room in our university for recording. I did all recording, producing, mixing, mastering, and other stuffs. Four of us copied the CD, printed the jacket and enclosed the lyrics notes all night long. Our first album "spangle" was 100% handmade.

How has your music changed since you first started out?

When we started to play, the music was more "pop". But we weren't satisfied with it, so it has changed little by little. These days, our music is rather "rock".

Let's take a peak at the romantic side of the group. Anyone married? Kids?

No one married! But Yu wants to, and she would like to have two children, a boy and a girl in the future. She has to look for the right guy first of all though!

Does anyone have a favorite place to go on a romantic date?

Yu: Disney Sea! It's a theme park in Tokyo. So beautiful and very exciting!!

What traits do you look for in someone you would date?

Gentlemen! Clever, rich, wise, fun, sweet, and handsome!

Other than music, what do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

We love to eat and drink! We do parties a lot, drinking tons of beer all night long! That is our relaxation. lol.

Who would you say is the most outgoing member of the group? The shyest?

sugar'N'spice live- click for full size Aska is the most outgoing. She can't stay at home when it is a beautiful day. She always seems so busy doing something somewhere. She got a lot of friends everywhere.

Yu is the shyest. She loves to stay home doing nothing but Internet surfing.

Do you have nicknames for each other?

No we don't! We just call each other Kyao, Tsue, Yu and Aska!

Does anyone have a favorite manga they read, or TV show they watch?

Yu: I like Japanese comedy TV shows! That is always a blast!!

Aska: My favorite TV program is MTV!

What are the band's plans for the rest of the year?

The world tour!!!! Hopefully. And we want to release a new CD too!

Do you have anything else you want to bring up or comment on?
