Kaela Kimura is a Japanese singer, musician, actress and model. She was born Rie Kaela Kimura on October 24, 1984 in Adachi, Tokyo. Kaela's father was British and her mother was Japanese. Her name "Kaela" uses the British spelling, more commonly seen as "Kayla" in the US. It's spelled Ka-e-ra in romanji.
Kaela began her career as a model, achieved some noteworthy exposure in 2002 in the Japanese teen magazine Seventeen. She then co-hosted the Japanese TV show Saku Saku from April 2003 to March 2006.
Kaela's first single "42" was released in Japan on June 23rd, 2004. Her self-titled debut album Kaela achieved a respectable #8 on the Japanese Oricon charts later that year. Her third single "Rirura Riruha" (Real Life Real Heart) featured on her second album Circle reached #3 on Oricon. The song was used for Vodafone commercials, helping to raise Kaela's profile in Japan.
In 2005 Kaela broadened her career by appearing in the movie "Custom Made 10:30." She also made a cameo appearance in the J-dorama "Attention Please" staring Ueto Aya, which featured her cover version of "Pretty Woman."
In 2006 Kaela became a singer for the Sadistic Mika Band. The group assumed the name Sadistic "Mikaela" Band for their October 25th, 2006 release of the album Narkissos. Kaela sings lead on three songs; Big-Bang Bang!, Sadistic Twist and Time Machine and sings a duo with Takahashi Yukihiro on the song Tumbleweed.
Her much anticipated third solo album Scratch was released on February 7, 2007. It soared to #1 on Oricon and firmly established Kaela as a superstar in Japan. The CD featured the single Magic Music, a remake of Linus of Hollywood's song "I Wanna Get With You."
Whether Kaela will choose to release her music to North America and perform a tour remains to be seen. Japan, meanwhile, are enjoying her February 6th single Jasper and her forth album "+1" that was released on April 2nd.
