December, 2008

Photo courtesy of Tonko If there is anything good about tragedy it is in the deeper appreciation the survivors feel toward life and love. For Akai Tonko, tragedy came on two fronts. She had to endure years of childhood torment because of a throat disorder, yet that paled in comparison to the tragic lose of two of her beloved family members while still a teen. But at 22 an operation changed everything, miraculously empowering her with a voice of beautiful harmony and a musical talent able to keep her family's memories alive forever in her songs.

So if you are a sucker for a story that starts sad but ends happy, come hear the tale to Akai Tonko, the self-producing singer-songwriter from Japan with a heart of gold.

Super Cozi - Photo by Agus Pande From Japan to the UK to Bali the sky is the limit when it comes to the sweeping musical force known as Super Cozi. Having paid her dues for seven years in a typical 90's Japanese rock band, Super Cozi has gone solo and started her own record label, Hypo=Espresso, to create her unique blend of techno, trance and chill out music.

So if you're in need of a break during the busy holiday season and looking for some soothing rhythms, come on over to the chill out room of the woman with the motto "Express in free form, live in freestyle." You'll be glad you did.

Photo courtesy of D-69 "Each time I just put into the music what comes out of me naturally" is how Fujiko described how he created his music. And it is a very poignantly emotional sound that comes from the three person pop-rock group, D-69. Named, of all things, after the table number of a bar they once sat at, the group's music is well grounded with lyrics from their beautiful singer Kei and a strong guiding bass from Rocka.

Their first full album, BAD GIRL FRIEND, was released this year and has proved to be a solid debut work. So spend a few minutes to listen and learn about these three musicians from Tokyo.

Photo courtesy of The Royal Dead Japan may be called the land of the rising sun but when night falls in certain clubs around Tokyo a fantastical gothic world springs to life, so to speak. The Royal Dead, a duet featuring aci and HAR, have exported their Japanese take on goth culture and music from the shores of their homeland to both Europe and North America. If you are looking for an introduction to this creepy world of fangs, blood and all things Halloweenish you've come to the right place.

Creature Creature - photo courtesy of Creature Creature Flowers are in bloom endlessly... Wind is blowing eternally... Water is flowing, flowing purely... Dripping flesh, learn fully...

The English translation may not do them justice, but that is a taste of the lyrics emanating from the dark conception called Creature Creature. The brainchild of Morrie, co-founder of the legendary Japanese group Dead End, Creature Creature has provided a vehicle for a whole new generation of fans to know the genius of one of Japan's true originals.

Sawako - Photo by Buzz Andersen At the border between the sounds of life and the traditions of music is the place you'll find a new style of artist. "Not functional... but miracle!" is the apt motto of Sawako. Her sound creations can be described by many terms, but "traditional" is certainly not one of them. Born in Nagano, Japan and now living in New York, Sawako has traveled quite a distance in her never ending quest to expand the borders of music. So do whatever you do to expand your own mind and take a trip into the world of soundscapes.
